    This religious history unit introduces students to the place of the Christian churches in Australian society from the colonial period to the present. It considers a number of methodological approaches and the work of a range of representative historians. Themes covered include sectarianism, church-state relations, denominational histories, ecumenism, migration, and changing religious demographics.

    Lectures (text and video), online tutorials, discussion, forum engagement, online videos, web links, reading.

  • Assessments

    1 x 1,000 word primary source analysis - 20%

    3 x 500 word posts on discussion board (1,500 words total) - 30%

    1 x 2,500 word essay - 50%

  • Learning Outcomes

    Upon successful completion of this unit, it is expected that students will be able to:

    1. Analyse significant events and people who have made a contribution to the history of Christianity in Australia.

    2. Compare and contrast a range of competing historical interpretations of Chrstianity in Australia.

    3. Critically interpret primary and secondary sources and use them appropriately.

    4. Construct a coherent historical argument, relevant to the needs of the contemporary church, using the conventions of the discipline of history.

    5. Articulate the value of historical awareness for the present identity and mission of Australian churches.
