Investing in you

Eva Burrows College scholarships are about investing in you. We believe that education can help realise a person's potential to become people who motivate, inspire and make a difference.

We offer two scholarships annually - Australia Scholarship for Women and Africa Scholarship. The scholarships provide financial grants to people with a passion to serve on the frontline of the Army’s mission.

The scholarships are named after General Eva Burrows, the 13th General of The Salvation Army, who held the highest ecclesiastical position by any woman in the world for seven years from 1986 to 1993. The two grants reflect Eva Burrows’ commitment to advance social justice, education and the development of leaders.

As the youngest person ever elected to the office of General, Eva Burrows was highly effective, directing operations in some 90 countries and re-established The Salvation Army in Eastern Europe: the former East Germany, Czechoslovakia, Hungary and Russia.  Many honours were bestowed upon Eva Burrows, including the Order of Australia (AO) in 1986 and advanced to Companion of the Order of Australia in 1994.

Eva Burrows life was dedicated to making a difference. She was known as the "people’s General” for her ability to connect with the vulnerable in society and engage warmly with people of all ages. Reflecting on her work, Eva Burrows articulated the important attributes of leadership as being able to inspire others with the importance of their work, speaking out confidently, advocating for the ‘common people’,  and spotting other potential leaders and developing their abilities.

Eva Burrows College named after the General seeks to live out and teach the values she embodied, one of them being the investment in the next generation of leaders through education. We are honored to be offering the two scholarships that reflect Eva Burrows’ commitment to invest in people.
