The Story of God, People and Land

This foundational unit will help you to deepen your faith and understanding as you explore the biblical story in the Hebrew bible. You will be introduced to the story and will learn about the culture and society of the time, as well as exploring some important theological themes.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this unit, it is expected that students will be able to:

  • Discuss the biblical narrative as literature giving attention to its historical social and cultural contexts and theological intent.
  • Identify key content and major themes that form the basis of the Hebrew bible, and how selected themes have a trajectory into the New Testsament.
  • Demonstrate basic interpretive skills.
  • Apply insights from their study to Christian life and ministry within their particular context.

Lecturer

Reverend Dr Arseny Ermakov taught at Nazarene Colleges in both Europe and Britain and briefly served as a pastor at St Petersburg Church of the Nazarene in Russia. His research interest is in the area of holiness and purity discourse in Ancient Judaism and Early Christianity as reflected in the light of new approaches to the study of ancient religions and linguistics. The issues of effective teaching and learning in biblical studies has taken an important place in his thinking and practice.

Mode of Delivery

This unit is delivered online with course materials on ARK, the Learning Management System for all our higher education study. Login details for this unit will be accessible to students on confirmation of enrolment into an award or the unit.

Unit Costs

This undergraduate unit costs approx. $2,184, which is determined by the University of Divinity and reviewed annually. You could also study this unit as a non-award student (audit) at the cost of $550. Non-credit study is for students who wish to study a unit but not participate in formal assessments. Fees are consistent for domestic and international students. International students are charged a separate application fee of $300 (plus GST) upon enrolment. Students who meet eligibility criteria may be eligible for AUSTUDY and FEE-HELP assistance.
