DescriptionThis unit explores the phenomenon of prophecy in Israel during the eighth century BCE.
The theology of specific prophets will be considered, including motifs such as covenant, eschatology, law and cult, social justice, election, "the remnant", and foreign nations. Critical and exegetical tools will be employed to study selected passages in Isaiah, Micah, Amos and Hosea.
Learning OutcomesUpon successful completion of this unit, it is expected that students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of the overall historical, political, and social framework of the Ancient Near East and the Eighth Century Prophets.
2. Describe the major theological themes of the relevant prophets.
3. Assess the relationship between Old Testament covenants, the Torah and the message of the Eighth Century Prophets.
4. Outline selected prophets' responses to religious syncretism in the eighth century.
