Supervised Theological Field Education will give you the skills to engage deeply in your learning while participating in an approved ministry placement. You will be introduced to a variety of models for theological reflection, which will help you to reflect on your ministry placement and allow you to continue to develop the skills and knowledge that you need in ministry. This is a double unit that you will complete over two semesters.

24 January 2025 to 31 October 2025

This is a practicum unit and is a double unit across two semesters. Students are expected to attend all teaching sessions, which have been scheduled for: 

Required synchronous class engagement: 

• 24 January 2025 (10am-3pm AEDT) *in person option available 
• 26 May 2025 (10am-12pm AEST) 
• 27 October 2025 (10am-12pm AEDT) 

Required synchronous peer group engagement: 

• Five 2-hour sessions per semester (Mondays 10am-12pm) – session timings may be revised in consultation with class members at the commencement of the semester. 

Expected synchronous class engagement: 

• 31 Mar 2025 (11am-12pm AEDT)
• 12 May 2025 (11am-12pm AEST)
• 18 August 2025 (11am-12pm AEST) 
• 15 September 2025 (11am-12pm AEST) 
• 13 October 2025 (11am-12pm AEDT) 

These workshops/tutorials supplement asynchronous content– session timings may be revised in consultation with class members at the commencement of the semester. 

Students are required to attend six 1-hour individual supervision sessions per semester– dates to be determined in consultation at the commencement of the semester. 

Students must complete a log of placement hours/activities. 

Threshold requirement: As a practicum unit, fulfilment of all 300 required engagement hours is expected. Failure to complete the full complement of placement hours, individual supervision sessions and peer group sessions puts the student at risk of failing the unit.  

UD Code of Conduct and Safeguarding module. Prerequisites: 18 points from Field B, 18 points from Field C and 18 points from Field D (excluding practicum units)

Please indicate to the Registrar generously well before 20 January 2025 if you would like to take Supervised Theological Field Education. An interview will be organised with the lecturer before you can enrol.

Enrolment in this unit is dependent upon:

• Being interviewed by the STFE Coordinator;
• Having an approved ministry placement; and
• Meeting relevant safeguarding requirements.

Learning is achieved through action-reflection on assigned placements, as well as individual and group supervision.

300 engagement hours is made up of 192 hours placement, 12 hours individual supervision, 36 hours peer group/workshoops/seminars, 24 hours planning/preparation, 36 hours reading and assessment tasks.

*This unit is offered at Undergraduate and Postgraduate level. Students may engage with people across both levels when this unit is delivered.

Upon successful completion of this unit, it is expected that students will be able to:

1.  Reflect theologically on ministry practice and ministry context using models of theological reflection.

2.  Demonstrate competencies in ministry practice within a ministry context.

3.  Document evidence of learning about self and ministry arising from the ministry context.

4.  Critique the core aspects of their emerging operational theology.

5.  Demonstrate an integrated understanding of child safeguarding and professional ministry standards.
