Mission Foundations will introduce you to the practice of mission and its priority for the people of God. You will explore mission from biblical, theological, historical, and cultural perspectives, while learning skills to help you develop and apply the concepts of mission to your life and ministry.

This unit is running as an online intensive.

10 to 20 June 2025

As this is an intensive unit, it is expected that students will be available every day during the two-week period. There will be a mix of personal work and online class discussions. 

Students will be required to engage with the online material each day and then join a Teams meeting for discussion most afternoons. Students should come to each class discussion having engaged with the material outlined for each day. The class discussions will assume students have worked through the online material and will be a discussion of the ideas and concepts of those topics. Students will have the opportunity to lead some of the class discussion which will be an input to Assessment Two.

No prerequisites required.

In an asynchronous environment students will engage carefully designed learning materials which may include readings, audio and video materials, a variety of learning activities, response to questions, reflection upon practice. They will also attend structured synchronous online engagement sessions which will promote peer to peer engagement and learning.

*This unit is offered at Undergraduate and Postgraduate level. Students may engage with people across both levels when this unit is delivered.

1 x 1,000 word Tutorial Paper/Seminar Paper - 25%

1 x 2,000 word Summative Reflection - 50%

Upon successful completion of this unit, it is expected that students will be able to:

1.  Articulate a biblical and theological understanding of Christian mission.

2. Identify developments in Christian mission in different eras of church history to the present time.

3. Identify selected key current cultural and sociological issues on the practice of mission for the church, including ecclesiology, colonisation, cross cultural mission and contemporary social movements.

4. Explain the concept and practice of holistic mission within The Salvation Army context.

5. Apply perspectives covered in this unit to the contemporary practice of Christian mission.
