It provides a solid foundation for further biblical and theological study. It develops skills in exegesis and the identification and analysis of key New Testament themes. A threshold concept to be acquired in this unit is: The books of the New Testament are works of literature, written and received in a particular historical period, for a distinct religious purpose.

This course unit enables students to read or research in greater depth a particular topic, to present the results of this reading or research to their peers and to engage in analytical discussion on the topic. A seminar is a class of students and an academic staff member that meets regularly. A seminar has no lectures. Students discuss assigned readings or their research and take an active role in their learning.

It introduces students to the antecedents of Reformation Theology - late medieval Religion, Humanism and Scholasticism; to the Reformers and their major doctrinal themes; to the impact of Reformation thought upon historical and contemporary contexts.

This unit explores the phenomenon of Israelite prophecy during the sixth century BCE through focussing upon the prophetic material commonly known as Deutero-Isaiah. It will give students an opportunity to further develop their exegetical skills through detailed engagement with the text. While this unit addresses theories concerning the unity of the book of Isaiah, its focus is upon Isaiah 40-55. It takes account of the historical, cultural, religious, literary, and theological aspects of the text. It will also attend to how these texts have been used by New Testament authors in their explanation of the Gospel.

This unit explores the phenomenon of prophecy in Israel during the eighth century BCE. The theology of specific prophets will be considered, including motifs such as covenant, eschatology, law and cult, social justice, election, "the remnant", and foreign nations. Critical and exegetical tools will be employed to study selected passages in Isaiah, Micah, Amos and Hosea.

BN3396B - A Narrative Study of the Gospel of Mark

This unit offers the opportunity to study various narrative approaches to Mark's Gospel. Students will explore the literary conventions and devices used by Mark, including characterization, dialogue and the use of irony. The unit examines reader-response methods, structuralist and post-structuralist readings and ideological approaches to the text.
